Stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui was detained by the Mumbai Police during a raid at a hookah parlour in South Mumbai, police said on Wednesday.
The police detained Faruqui and 13 others who were found smoking illicit hookahs during the raid.
However, the Big Boss 17 winner was later released, news agency ANI said quoting a Mumbai police official.
The Mumbai Police on Tuesday conducted a raid at a hookah parlour located in Bora Bazar area of Fort at around 10:30 pm on Tuesday and it continued till 5 am of Wednesday, an official said.
"During the raid, the police found stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui and others smoking hookahs at the joint. We also have a video of their act. We detained Faruqui and others, but they were later allowed to go as the sections slapped against them were bailable," a senior police official told PTI news agency.
Faruqui and others were booked under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act along with the Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 283 (danger or obstruction in a public way or line of navigation), 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), the police said.
Faruqui first made headlines in 2021 when he spent a month in jail after complaints were filed against him for the derogatory remarks on Hindu deities during a stand-up show
Later, Faruqui won the reality show ‘Lock Upp’ in 2022 and this year he won the Big Boss 17 season.
